Sorry to ask such a basic question, but could you briefly explain what the
difference is between plain text and HTML. Why would one choose one rather
than the other for an email? Thanks!

To answer the last of your questions, you can tell OE to send email in
plain text or HTML by starting a new message and, while in that message,
going to the format list in the file menu. You'll see the relevant
checkbox.
As for OE window maximization, I remember encountering this problem in the
past and being told by FS that it can't and won't be done. As you also
seem to, I find I often need to maximize my edit window in order to read
back what I've written.
Incidentally, as other listers have recently noted, there are several
advantages to sending email in HTML. However, because I have partially
sighted friends who have an easier time with plain text, I've made that my
default. Even with plain text, I've had no problems creating links.

Why arn't both the edit and read windows automatically maximized in OE?
Also, why does OE ask if I want to send the message in html or plain text?
