Hotmail Account & Jaws

Hi All:
I've got some issues about Hotmail account.
1. After establishing a new Hotmail account on Internet, I proceeded to
set up a new account/identity in Outlook Express. Imagine my shock when it
said I now need to subscribe!
2. If subscription is required, how much?
3. Any of you out there been successful in reading email in Hotmail
directly on Internet? What are some guidelines in doing this.
I had set up Hotmail so that I can have access to MSN IM. What a mess am I
getting into!
