Hard Drive Dying

Hi List: My hard drive is beginning to whine. I think it's dying. Any
suggestions on how I can prepare for this and save all the appllications and
settings and license information and scripts, etc, so that I can copy it all
to a new hard drive? I have a 500 G external USB drive that I use for backups
by just copying the data folders to it periodicly. I have about 400 G free.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. Kathye
