Thanks. My problem was that I needed to have the folder highlighted. I
was always one level down, in the file list.
Actually, the status line, when one is on a folder, gives the file count
as well as the free disk space -- exactly what I needed!

In Windows Explorer or, in the alternative, My Computer, is there an
easy way to get a count of the number of files in a folder? I was told
that by pressing control-a, Windows Explorer would tell the file count.
If the file count was showing on the screen, I could not get JAWS to
find it.
