When you import .MP3 files into a sound editor, they are decompressed to .WAV format, so you can join them. When you save the combined file to a .MP3 file, you are recompressing a file that was already compressed, thus producing a file that is even more compressed than the original, resulting in poorer sound quality. Goldwave has a file merge utility built into the program. You can merge several audio files to one audio file with this utility without degrading the audio quality of the original audio files. Using a program that merges audio files without the need of a sound editor would definitely be the best option.
