Changing sounds in windows xp

Hey guys,
Having an interesting issue.
I brought up the list of sounds. I rrowed down to the one I want to chance,
and then went over to the combo box that lists the different choices
I pressed alt down arrow, and went to the one that I wanted, and then
checked it.
Nothing, the sound didn't change.
I then tried it again, nothing.
Anyone have any ideas on what my have gone wrong?
I tried to set up the windows XP notify.wave for when I get new mail.
Is this a common problem with the xp sounds?
