Subject: Anyone out there using JAWS on a Dell Inspiron 5150?

Hi listers,

I'm contemplating the purchase of a Dell Inspiron 5150. The only catch
is
that this machine includes an Nvidia GeForce FX Go5200 graphics card and
I
wonder about the compatibility of this card with JAWS using the Dell
drivers. There is a three month old technical support note (TSN) under
video cards on the FS web site that indicates that the Nvidia GeForce4
440
Dell Go Mobile is incompatible with JAWS, resulting in video intercept
errors. The TSN does not refer explicitly to a GeForce FX Go card, but
it
does talk about Nvidia cards in Dell notebooks as being most severely
affected by the problem.
I'm really not sure whether the newer model card experiences the same
difficulty in Dell or if it is perfectly fine. I've placed a copy of
the
TSN at the end of this E-mail.

So, I'm asking if there's anyone on the list who is currently using JAWS

with a Dell Inspiron 5150 notebook, or knows of someone using JAWS with
this notebook. If so, I'd really appreciate you dropping me an
E-mail--off-list so as not to clutter it up--and letting me know of your

experiences with it. Don't forget to mention what version of JAWS
you're
running. I can post a summary of responses back to the list later.

Many thanks,
Andrew.

Details of Selected Bulletin

Bulletin Type: TSN

Date Posted: 03/11/2003

Product Name: JAWS for Windows

Version: Any

Category: Video Cards

Short Description:

Nvidia Quadro series and Nvidia mobile video cards are not compatible
with
JAWS: Video Intercept Errors.

Problem:

In Win XP as well as the other NT based Win operating systems, the
Nvidia
graphic workstation and mobile class video cards are incompatible with
JAWS. JAWS
is not unable to hook properly using both the earlier jfwvid.dll and the

more recent DCM jawsvid.dll; you may get a repeated JAWS Video Intercept
Error. Dell laptops and notebooks with Nvidia products appear to be most
severely
affected. Cards which have proven to be problematic include: Quadro,
Quadro 2 MX series, Quadro DCC, GeForce4 440 Go Dell Mobile

Solution:

Though we have reports that some users have had success with some of
these
cards, the factor or set of factors which affects compatibility has not
yet
been
identified. Freedom Scientific continues to look at this issue; there is
no
workaround at this time.
