Thanks to a friend, the solution was very simple.
First of all, he told me where to go immediately--to fix the problem, I mean.
The fix was in speech and sounds manager in the configuration menu.
In there, I guess I had inadvertently changed a scheme.
Thanks to everyone for their suggestions.
