I think there was a way to disable the graphical smiles in aim 5.9 however, it
has been a while since I used that version so I can not give specific
instructions If possible i would recomend upgrading to aim 6.8. You can
install it and it won't interfeer wiht the aim 5.9 installation so you can
switch back easily if you don't like it for some reason.

reading it it's just saying my screen name, without the graphical smily. How do
