2 sound card problem

I can't seem to get speech from my default sound card after installing a second
card. I can get speech from the second card, no problem. But, if I set the
first card as the default, I get no Eloquence nor do I get Narrator.
Sometimes I can get speech from the first card but it is gone the next time I
boot up. What's wrong?
I have checked the windows mixer for both sound cards to be sure levels are set
right and nothing is muted.
XP Media 2005, Jfw7.0, Geforce video.
Original audio, Realtek ac'97. New card. Audigy 4 Pro.
