Dear Ms. Talshir,
I am writing to you on behalf of the Hebrew University English Department.
The University is organising an open day at the Givat Ram campus in
Jerusalem on Friday, March 3rd. High school students from around the
country are invited to partake in a day of short introductory lectures
given in the various fields of study. They are also encouraged to talk to
us and students representing the departments and look into different
programs of study.
The English Literature Department is particularly eager to welcome students
who excel in English, have a love of literature and a real aptitude for
reading and engaging in critical thought. We know there are many students
in high schools around the country who would have a wonderful time at the
lecture. We would love to meet and talk to them.
I am giving a lecture this year on the correspondences between horror and
aesthetics - a demanding but fun talk that is usually met with great
enthusiasm on the part of the young audience. I allude to theories of
aesthetics alongside Mary Shelley's *Frankenstein *and Herman Melville's *Moby
Dick. *The talk - no more than 30 minutes - is given in English. It should
be easy to follow for English speakers or students with good language
skills.
Is there any way to circulate the news amongst English teachers - perhaps
with an emphasis on English speaking groups (dovrei-Anglit)?
I am certain that students making an effort to participate will greatly
benefit from the experience. I would also like to note that the department
would love to keep the lines of communication open with the ministry with a
thought to productive exchanges in the future.
