I have moved to using IMAP with my gmail account. I created a few Labels on the advanced IMAP gmail web page. These then get automatically downloaded and synchronized as folders in either Thunderbird or Windows Live Mail clients. I then can move messages to be stored in these folders from any client. It even allows me to move a message to one of these gmail "Labels" from any of my other accounts, some of which are POP3 accounts. This is also a great automatic backup strategy since all of my saved messages are stored on the gmail server and a text file version is saved on every Thunderbird client, whether in Vinux or Windows.
