I'm coming into this thread a little late, but I'm wondering if you have
installed Doug Lee's scripts, they make navigation a lot easier particularly
with its menus and text chat facility, you can download them from
http://www.dlee.org/skype.
If you are still having trouble adding contacts, you can always ask people
to add you first, when they do this you will receive a contact request, you
should tab in the main Skype window to a contact request button and press
space or enter on it, this will open a dialog with the requester's user name
and various details, you simply tab over to the add contact button and
activate it, and that's that.
If you need any more help don't hesitate to ask, I have shown lots of people
how to set up Skype and configure it for best use.
