Hi again Susan,

How you switch to the Jaws cursor on a laptop depends upon how Jaws has been
set up but the most likely way is that you use the capslock key as your
JawsKey.

If this is the case, in other words, if you use the capslock key in
conjunction with other keys to cause Jaws to speak etc., you should be able
to press capslock+the letter p to switch to the Jaws cursor. You can also
revert to the pc cursor by pressing capslock+the semi-colon.

There a number of cursors available to Jaws users but the most commonly used
are the usual pc cursor for normal use and the Jaws cursor for reaching
parts of a window where the pc cursor cannot take you.

There is often text displayed in a window which the pc cursor does not speak
because we normally tab from one item to another and this may jump past text
which appears between items. The Jaws cursor is able to navigate these
areas and speak the text.

The area of the screen which the Jaws cursor is able to navigate is
defaulted to the current window but this can be changed by using the
JawsKey+r to allow the cursor to navigate the whole application or even an
unrestricted mode. This latter may confuse you rather since it may speak
snippets from a number of windows concatenated together and making for a
jumble of seemingly disconnected words.

I hope that this is not too confusing an explanation.

Playing around with the Jaws cursor is probably the best way of
understanding what it can reveal to you.

Regards,

Phil Medway.

Hi Phil.

Thanks for the info but I'm using a laptop so could you let me know what the
key strokes are for that keyboard to move between the jaws and pc cursor?
I'd also like to know what the difference is between the two as I've never
used the jaws cursor before. Sorry if I seem ignorant in this.

Sue.
