Hallo George I read this a bit late having experimented with C cleaner Disk clean up and Regscrub, I then tried to send to list but had lost all connections on both, after many hours got a connection back, that Win Patrol spotted something unfamiliar trying to enter computer, and barked. Anyway in the latest version of computer active from TNauk which I still get on audio tape is a very interesting article on temporary files and it covers both Xp and Vista. I'll list a few. 1) Your system packs up for some reason while you are running an application. 2) When you install new software, some poorly written installation programs fail to remove temporary files they create and use during installation. 3) Windows conventions are such that temporary files should carry the expension ".tmp", and yet the programmers have used a different extension for whatever reason. Then they forget they have done this, and equally so, forget to remove them. 4) And proably a dozen or more other reasons. As a general rule, if you have no programs running, anything in a folder called "temp" can invariably be deleted. If you try to empty a "temp" folder, and it contains files that are in use, Windows will tell you. An example of a temporary file is one of the work files required by a program while it is running, but may be deleted upon the completion of the program. Hope this explains temporary files.
