Hi Dorothy,
I haven't used the stripper which Tiddy mentioned but I do know that many
folk find it very useful.
The beneficiary of the removal of preceding signs on original messages is
actually the recipient rather than the sender.
When the option is set to add greater than signs, vertical bars etc. to the
messages below your reply, this is done by Outlook express just before the
reply is sent. If, therefore, you have a number of messages below your
current reply all of which have had greater than signs pre-pended, the first
would have a single greater than sign the second, two the third, three etc.
Unfortunately, any signs, greater than, vertical bar etc. which have been
added by a previous correspondents message will not be removed.
There is nothing to stop you from manually removing the signs below your
current message before you send it but this would be a rather arduous task.
It may be that the stripper does this but, as I said, I haven't used it
myself.

was told you cannot remove only the greater. If I receive an email from a
friend full of Vertical bars greater are you saying I can remove them
permanently before sending it on as a forward to a third part? If I did
what you suggest in Tools of O.E. is that a local setting for this
