You can stop JAWS announcing the read-only status of edit fields if you want to in the following manner. 1 Press insert+F2 and select "configuration manager". 2 Press alt+S and go down to "speech and sounds manager" and press enter. 3 You should already be on the "classic" or whatever your preferred schemee is. Press tab to reach the "edit current scheme" button and press spacebar on it. 4 Now press control+tab to reach the "controls" page and then press letter R until you reach "ReadOnly edit". 5 Press tab to reach the radio button that currently highlights "speak" and use the arrow keys to adjust this to "off". 6 Tab to "OK" and then press tab until you reach the button "save current scheme" and press spacebar. 7 Tab to "OK" and press spacebar and press alt+F4, if you are asked to save changes to your configuration press enter on the "yes" button. When you have done this a new file is created in your user settings folder called "classic.SMF" or similar. The SMF denotes it is a JAWS speech scheme. If it has the name "classic" then it is sure to be picked up by any new installation of JAWS that you parachute it into with your modification complete. Hope this helps. Regards. Hi Mike, You need to do this in Speech and Sounds Manager under the Configuration Manager. Whether you do it in the Default file and affect all programs or make changes in individual apps is up to you. This is what you do. Enter Config Manager Alt S to set options Press M for the Speech and Sounds Manager and you will go straight into it Now tab three times I think to "edit current scheme" and press the spacebar or enter key Now go to the File types tab and the list view which you will find there Press the letter R twice and you will be on the Read Only item Tab once then cursor up once and you will be on the "ignore" checkbox which will be checked by simply moving to it Ok that and save in the usual way A bit long-winded but you should be able to work it out. Hi all, Can someone help please? I have Jaws 9.0 and X P Home edition. Since i installed Jaws 9.0, jaws is saying read only in various apps. such as in Outlook Express emails, and even in a Games For The Blind game called Word Play, it still says read only. How can I switch this annoying and irritating message off please? Thanks, Michael Brown. The kindness you spread today will be gathered up and returned to you tomorrow.
