OK, thanks for the suggestions. Part of the problem is the issue of
learning new things but these might be a solution if we have to move away
from Jaws.

Yes it really is windows 7 for jaws 11. Even then, I don't think it really
worked 100 percent properly til jaws 12.
He could try using NVDA. It's not at all a bad screenreader these days.
If he uses Office 2010 or later there is window-eyes. Note that Office 2003
does not work properly with windows 8.

Hi all,
I suspect that I know the answer to bits of this but does anyone know the
earliest version of Jaws that will work with Windows 8.1 properly please.
I've got a client who uses Jaws 11 and who has the offer of a new laptop but
does not have the money to upgrade to Jaws 16. The other alternative is to
downgrade the laptop to Windows 7.
If he goes for the downgrade option, can this be done within Windows 8.1 or
is that just a way of making Windows 8.1 look like Windows 7 that would
still not work properly with Jaws 11?
Any thoughts?
