If you tick the box, the Jaws application automatically minimises to the system tray when your computer starts. If you don't tick the box, Jaws remains open like any other programme on your screen. I tend to prefer ticking the box. There's no particular need to have the Jaws application open all the time, it can run quite happily in the background. If you need to get to the Jaws menus, you can just use Jaws key + j.
