December 2005 Bulletin board Useful information Products

Internet users are increasingly aware of its
dangers
According to a study carried out by Jupiter
Research, 32% of Internet users use anti-spyware software. Although those
taking part in the study stated that their main reason for doing so was to
delete cookies, a significant number also said that they were very concerned
about protecting themselves against spyware. The study proves that the
information campaign conducted by software publishers and the media has begun
to bear fruit: Internet users are now aware of the damage that spywares cause,
as demonstrated by the fact that a third of them are already taking the
necessary precautions. In order to confront this widespread problem - a
Symantec study has shown that it takes only one hour of surfing the Net for
more than 850 suspicious programs to install themselves on a computer -
specialised software is therefore indispensable.

Instant-messaging services: a new target for
viruses
                              Victims of their own popularity,
instant-messaging services have recently become the favoured targets of viruses
and other malware. But should we avoid using these practical tools altogether?
What is the extent of the threat and how can we protect ourselves? Explanations.

Typosquatting: watch out for those typos!
A misspelled URL can sometimes lead you to sites
that are rigged with Trojan Horses or adware. And these can be serious trouble.

I use my PC with an administrator account. Are
there any risks?
It is unwise to use your PC with an administrator
account if your operating system allows you (like Windows XP) to use other
types of accounts. A computer running on an administrator account gives
complete access to any hackers and viruses that manage to infiltrate the
system. This allows them to change the registry as they please and to access
several critical functions. To avoid these risks, use limited user accounts.

I installed Norton Personal Firewall but now
can't access some sites.
Your firewall's configuration must be too strict.
If you can't access sites using HTTPS or SSL protocols, open the application's
"Security" menu, click on "Custom level" and select the "Enable secure
connections" option. If you have problems with other sites, check that the
parental control function isn't causing the problem. If you don't think you
need parental control, you can deactivate it.
