Hi Catherine

I was puzzled by this a couple of years ago and asked the same question on
this list. I think it was George who replied and he explained it, if my
memory serves me, as a difference in the length of the dash. It's called an
M dash because it is the length of a letter M whereas a normal dash is the
length of a letter N (mike and November respectively).

There is a way of turning it off in the tools/options dialogues in Word, but
I can't remember just exactly where. If you have a hunt around, I'm sure
you'll find it.

I think it's an American thing, so it's not in our Anglo-Saxon vocabulary.
It doesn't look any different to us as a dash is a dash is a dash, as far as
screen readers are concerned, but visually it looks longer.

Hope this makes sense and that I remembered correctly.

Kind regards ... Scott

Hi,

What's the difference between what JAWS calls "dash" and what it calls "n
dash"? I have a Word document with both of these in and as far as I can
tell there's no difference between them: they are both dashes surrounded by
one space and a word on both sides.

Also, do other people who don't use JAWS ever refer to "n dash"? I've never
come across the phrase other than JAWS saying it.
