There are two methods: one is that the microphone has a battery inside, the other is that the equipment that the microphone is plugged in to provides the power down the audio cable (the Iyonix /does/ /not/ do this). So you only have any chance if you have a microphone that has a battery. I find myself disagreeing with the statement "An electret, with internal battery, should work" because it is still unlikely to provide enough signal level. The mic input of the Iyonix has only 20 dB more gain than the line inputs (translation: not enough). So it would work, but the results would still be too quiet to be satisfactory.
