Ha! I did the same thing last week.
Blame the Exchange devs -- they should never allow you to enable
"Outlook Anywhere" when the service isn't installed!

I just spent 4 hours with some Exch folks trying to figure out why my
E12 server kept giving me "501 not implemented" for my RPC/HTTP testing
(new blog in progress) before I realized that I'd fergetsted to install
the RpcProxy prior to installing Exch. "Read the logs, Luke" - "not
implemented" seems kinda obvious in retrospect...
