how to: smtp keyword filters (look for specific words)

How do you get the application filter, SMTP keywords to pick up ONLY the
word you enter and not other words that contain the one you are after.
Example - try and filter the word "sex" (no quotes), and you will also get
e-mails filtered that have words that contain "sex" like "Essex".
I have tried using every combination of quotes and spaces before and after
the word and none seem to work.
Am I the only one that is having this problem?
