Well, to be fair, you really need to consider the huge number of people who will follow Microsoft Update's "recommended" settings and install SP2 from there. Even if you click the details for the update, and even if you then click both links for SP2 provided in the details, there is nothing there about ISA ADAM in those links. So I don't think you can say "for nothing more than a lack of reading" when there is nothing there to read in the first place in many instances- nothing easy or obvious anyway.
But that's why I'm so glad that you took the time to post this information, even if Steve is being a slag ;) Getting first-hand data on issues like this from you really shows the value of the ISA and ISA-Pros lists. I, of course, am not affected, as I installed ADAM on the "eve" of the RTM deployment, so there's be no raising Cain.

I posted it because of the humungo influx of customers complaining about
nothing more than their inability (or unwillingness) to read the WS03
SP2 relnotes.
It's a damn shame when the Windows team documents this known issue and
so many ISA administranglers destroy their once-proud ISA deployments
for nothing more than a lack of reading.

For those of you who are considering deployment of Windows 2003 Sp2 on
your ISA 2004 or 2006 CSS server, you better be reading the SP2

relnotes

(you better be doing it anyway, yanumpty).
The short story is this:
If you install WS03 SP2 over ADAM RTM (as is delivered in ISA 2004 &
2006 for WS03 RTM & SP1), you will break ADAM.  This does not occur if
your ADAM instance was installed as part of WSo3 R2.  Otherwise, you
*MUST* get and install ADAM SP1 before installing WS03 SP2.
