Hi Risun,
If you're connected via VPN, the ping let's you know about the server's
network stack being active, but it doesn't really provide useful
information about the service's health. Like Jim said, you can send a
request targeted to the specific service to determine the health of the
said service.

So as the question goes what's a good alternative?
As i said, never needed this as we are connected with VPN, but just for
knowledge sake.

I dont think this can be done. But lets wait to hear if someone has a
solution to this.
Since we have a VPN connection and published Terminal Services, i never
had a problem testing the connection.

All,
I set up ISA Server Standard Edition now and users needs to check
heart-beat to internal web server from externel network.
ISA seems cannot make server publishing rule with ICMP.
How do I set up ?

Pinger client --- internet --- ISA -- Web Server (SNAT client).
