SMTP service running on SBS

Hi all, it seems that if I do not start the smtp service on my SBS 2K
server that has the works, (ISA, Exch and AD) my Exchange mail will not
go out. It works OK for a couple of days then stops. Is it not a best
practice to disable that service and just open up port 25 for exchange?
I guess I will need to buy a SBS server book.
I have another SBS environment where my isa publishes to an internal
SBS exch server and on that isa firewall I do not run the SMTP service.
Any suggestions for the stand-alone config with SBS, do I need to keep
the smtp service disabled and do something else?
Thanks,
Peter
