Joseph, probably some jokers with no idea who just learnt how to talk
smtp from a link they stumbled across buried in one of their anna nicole
smith google searches.

I agree with Jim, I sometimes monitor my snort stuff to flat out block
losers who hammer me and fill my logs with their idiocy.

Only from those hosts...
I've taken to blocking some IPs at the ISA jsut because of the sheer
volume of crap that fills my mail logs.

Well, I've traced the activity back to China. Most likely will be
difficult to contact those administrators. Would blocking that IP
address via ISA stop the command line type of attacks?

Is this a distributed attack or is it coming from a set of subnets?
Since your SMTP filter is catching them, you have logs that you can send
to the ISP in question...

Subject: [isalist] SMTP and command line

http://www.ISAserver.org

Hi all,

Lately, I've been seeing many attempts and hacks against my SMTP. My
External IP address on my ISA box is being used in some type of command
line hacking attempt and that is causing lots of SMTPEvnt service
messages. For example, telnet 192.168.1.1 25. Has anyone else seen
this in their logs and if so, what are some good practices to protect
command line access to port 25?

Thank you,

Joseph
