I really-really have to caution you about programs such as MRTG. They
look great, and are good trouble-shooters, but do not, repeat DO NOT,
put 100% faith in this program to show you what how much bandwidth is
being used! The program uses a 5-minute "average" to generate the
graphs, and they are horribly deceiving...

I say this because our WAN service provider swears by it and it drives
me nuts... Our WAN gets totally saturated with traffic to the point
that clicking on a button in our database program takes 2-3 minutes to
accomplish, and we complain to them that they need to do something about
it, but they come back with "Well, MRTG shows that you are only using
about 1/3 of your bandwidth, so the problem isn't on our end!"... Okay,
so that is para-phrased, but you get the point. I've been going
round-and-round with them on this topic for a couple of years now, and
every time I think they understand they come back with another similar
statement. ARRRGH!

Subject: [isalist] OT: Bandwidth tool?

Hello list,

I am sure this is a dumb question, but I am going to ask it anyway. Is
there
a quick and easy way to determine how much bandwidth is being used on a
network?

Thanks for any help,
Barbara
