DNS setting

In the list of NS entries in DNS, what should the ip address of the isa
show as? I set it to be the the internal ip but previously was the
external one. I changed it cos when I pinged isa from the internal
clients it was resolving to the external address.
Did I do the right thing?
I am new to DNS so any referrals to any docs would be appreciated.
