I'm just learning ISA myself, but might it have something to do with web
requests going through the web proxy? I'm assuming the ping command doesn't
go through the web proxy.

Subject: [isalist] DNS lookup problems (?) using a dialup ISA setup

http://www.ISAserver.org

I have set up an ISA standalone server with a fixed IP ISDN dialup as the
primary link to the internet.

When I use a firewall client to access the internet, it appears to work OK
at first, initiating the demand-dial and returning the web pages I
request. However, when the dialup link is dropped according to the
settings in the dial-up (in my case after 5 mins of inactivity), when I
return to IE and try to continue browsing,I get an error message almost
instantly saying that 'the page cannot be displayed' and that 'The gateway
could not retrieve the requested page'. This includes pages that I had
been browsing only moments before. The demand-dial is not re-initiated.

I have a DNS server / DC which has root hints configured and the IP
addresses of my ISP's DNS servers in the forwarders. The internal domain
name is of the form 'mycompany.local'

The firewall client is configured with just the local DNS server address
(and the ISA details in the IE Tools, Options window).

The ISA is configured with the internal DNS server address on its internal
cards (2 off) and the ISP's DNS servers on the ISDN adapter.

I am confused as to why the lookup and the demand dial should work
sometimes and not others. If I try to ping my ISP's IP address from a
command prompt, the demand dial link is immediately re-established and I
can continue browsing as normal.

I am at a bit of a loss and any help would really be much appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Matthew Wilde
