Interesting point!
I'd like to add the caveat that if you try this, you only allow pings
from the IP of the DHCP server (you can get this IP from an
"ipconfig/all"). This way, you're still reasonable "invisible" to anyone
else.

Hi folks,
Just learn't something that may or may not apply to a lot of you who
can't renew dhcp leases on your cable modems or dsl routers.
I was speaking to a techie I met here in Bermuda today, and found out he
used to work in the cable modem support group for NTL in the UK. I don't
remember why it came up but the fact that some people (NTL), can have
problems with their lease renewal through isa stemmed from the dhcp
server not getting a ping reply from the modem. Apparently a lot of
ISP's servers don't renew the leases if they don't get a ping response.
So if you allow ping responses it may solve the problem. Must be worth a
try for all you people out there that can't renew.
