There are a lot of factors to consider. I think it is the quality of training
the dogs and students get that is important. Large school could mean files get
lost, and I have seen this actually happen. Smaller does not necessarily mean
better trainers or training. I was at a school that had a smaller class, pretty
much the only people you saw were the trainer on class and the cook. I was
working a route with the dog I had and he blew a curb. I asked the trainer if
she wanted me to re-work it. This was out of politeness more then anything
else as, I corrected a guide dog when we did a traffic check and the trainer
rebuked me, saying he was the one that says whether to correct the dog or not
and if the dog needed correcting he was the one that would do it. This was 2
weeks into the training. Anyway back to the blowing of the curb. The trainer
told me it was my fault the dog blew the curb, not the dog's. To Quote her,
"Why should you re-work it, it was your fault not the dog's. Why blame the dog
for something that was clearly your fault!" It is not about assigning blame it
is about being a safe working team. At a fund raiser it was commented on the
relationship the dog and I had. They said, "it is clear you loved each other
and your dog looks to you for direction, no one else." This was 3 days before
graduating. One of the schools was small and the other a larger school. Both
were slow in giving veterinary care when I expressed concern about the dog's
stool. The larger school took a week before attending to him and it was found
out he had a mild infection, which was treated with medication and went away in
3 days. The smaller school blamed me for the loose stools. They never did take
the dog to a vet to get him checked out.

I agree about the smaller schools. We intend to keep Gallant Hearts relatively
small, although we hope to add another trainer in the next couple of years. We
only put out about 6 dogs a year.

Hi Jody,
There’s a very small outfit in the UK called Seeing Dogs Alliance. They only
have one trainer and only put out 2 or 3 dogs a year. Sadly I don’t think
they’ll be around when I need my next dog. I love the personal service you get
from a small school.
Cheers.

I defected to the dark side and bagged myself a school-trained dog. Turns
out he still needs a lot of training, but work commitments don’t leave me
time to train from scratch.
Hope you all and your dogs are healthy and happy.

Jody here, still hanging around. Actually I just returned from the

I'm still around too, just don't like talking to myself. No use
posting dog food advisories or my exploits to a list that is so
quiet. It would be like whistling in a dense forest, no one would
hear it. Grin. Besides that, my time is taken up with boarding dogs,
little training of potential guide dogs
in that. I have seen Jewel and Wayne on other lists/Facebook groups.

Hi: this is Mary Beth Wells and Oden from Lake Isabella California.
This list has been so quiet lately I was wondering if anyone is still out
there.
