We will convene a five-day meeting in Switzerland June 9-13 on ethical issues arising in the measurement of the global burden of disease (GBD), with an international, stellar group of speakers. The sponsors are the Brocher Foundation, a Swiss non-profit, and the Institute for Health Metrics and Evaluation (IHME), a Gates-supported research organization on the campus of the University of Washington in Seattle, where the GBD team is located. All sessions will be held at the Brocher Villa, near Geneva, on the southern shore of Lake Geneva. [cid:image001.jpg@01CF4E5A.A4F05230]This is the third of a series of biannual conferences at Brocher with the title "Brocher Academy of Global Population Health". As the word "academy" suggests, it is both a working meeting for scholars and also an educational opportunity, open to advanced graduate students, post-docs, and younger scholars. The latter are chosen from the pool of applicants by the directors of the event (Dan Wikler, Nir Eyal, and Samia Hurst) and approved by the Brocher Board. Brocher covers the costs of attending (food and lodging in or near the site in Hermance, Switzerland), which would otherwise be prohibitively expensive, but travel costs are not reimbursed. The website for the conference is here<http://www.brocher.ch/fr/events/86/brocher-summer-academy-in-the-ethics-of-global-population-health-2014-ethical-choices-for-dalys-and-the-measurement-of-the-global-burden-of-diseas>, and an updated call for applications is attached. The deadline for application is 17 April 2014. Also attached FYI is the "methods" paper, published in the mid-December 2012 Lancet amongst other reports from the latest GBD iteration. These meetings consist of five long, densely packed, tiring days of discussion and debate with outstanding scholars in philosophy, economics, epidemiology, and related disciplines. An earlier meeting resulted in the publication of this recent publication. Its table of contents is posted here<http://ukcatalogue.oup.com/product/9780199931392.do>, and will give you some idea of what these sessions are like. Our tradition has been to follow the close of the conference with a few days in the Swiss Alps, hiking from one mountain hut to another, on our own dime. Though the routes are challenging, some of the most fruitful discussions have taken place on the trail. General fitness is required, but no technical expertise. If you might be interested in joining the hike, do block off 13-17 June (though we may return to Geneva earlier, e.g. on the 15th/16th).
