Hi Ellen,

Is your friend's response based on policy or hger thoughts. I guess we need

Subject: [infoshare] I asked a friend to confirm or deny the Rumors about
A-A-R!

  Hi all,

This is what I wrote to my friend who is on the A-A-R Advisory:

    here are my questions

I was told that "call out and assist" doesn't mean that the driver is
required to get out of the AAR vehicle. Can that possibily be true?
If they send a sedan, there is no way I could tell if a driver didn't
get out of the car and call and assist me to the vehicle. Even with
the vans, I would never feel safe to walk into the street to find the
van by sound alone! What is the scoop on
    that?

It was also mentioned that many of the AAR users will be reevaluated
for eligibility. Thus weeding out those of us who can use public
    transportation. True or False?? RIN)

The announcement when calling AAR to make a reservation, says something
about arranging
transportation to subway stations with pick ups or drop offs sounds like
another nightmare--how could we ever get the system to coordinate with AAR?

  My friend's response:

Your email wins the prize for most provocative subject line of the year. LOL.

Let me answer the question : To my Knowledge, that is not correct about
callout and assist. They cannot expect a blind or visually impaired person to
find a vehicle.

The only thing I can think of that might have been said is that drivers
aren't supposed to leave vehicles out of their sight. I guess an extreme
example of this would be the time I took AAR to meet you and Audrey at the
Popover Cafe and Amsterdam Avenue was closed for several blocks because of a
street fair.

That driver took a risk by walking me to the address, leaving his van several
blocks behind him.

Often, more and more often at least for me, they park across a street. Now
are we supposed to know they're there, A.) and B.) cross a street in the middle
of a block to reach them? No, we are not.

So I think that rumor is wrong.

I think the other one is closer to being true but is twisted around and not
quite accurate as stated: People who already have conditional eligibility are
in some cases being taken to and from bus stops. We just had or board meeting
on Tuesday and nothing whatever was said about reevaluating anyone other than
people whose eligibility period is up for reevaluation.

appy Turkey Day to one and all!
  Ellen
