She was recognized during her lifetime as one of America's most prominent and innovative sculptors; and continues to inspire artists today through her pioneering installations and sculptures made of found wood. This exhibition, the first major survey of Nevelson's work since 1980, includes 66 sculptures, works on paper, and two room-size masterworks. One of her large installations is being specially reassembled with loans from twelve museums and private collections including the Art Institute of Chicago, The Museum of Modern Art, and the Whitney Museum of American Art, among others. more > Click here to see all events related to this exhibition Also on view: Dateline Israel: New Photography and Video Art On view now through August 5, 2007 > Launch the special online exhibition. Her revolutionary essay, "Why Have There Been No Great Women Artists" (1970) was significant for introducing a feminist perspective to the field of art history and criticism. Nochlin is a specialist in the art of the 19th century and is deeply committed to the study of gender in art and to the work of women artists, both in the past and present. more Photo: Adam Husted; Painting: Philip Pearlstein's Portrait of Linda Nochlin and Richard Pommer. The Museum of the City of New York The Jewish Daily Forward: Embracing an Immigrant Community On view now through September 17, 2007 The Jewish Daily Forward, founded in 1897 and still publishing today in English and Yiddish, once boasted a readership larger than that of the New York Times. This exhibition looks at the newspaper as a window into life in New York City-particularly during the heyday of Jewish immigrant life in the first half of the 20th century. The exhibition, which opens on the 110th anniversary of the Forward's first issue, features photographs and artifacts that document the concerns of these New Yorkers and the way in which the Forward helped to shape and reflect them. more Members of The Jewish Museum can get 2 for 1 admission in the month of May, by showing their JM membership card at the Museum of the City of New York Admission Desk. Come and enjoy 11 of his films including the New York premiere of Yipee: A Journey to Jewish Joy. Somewhere in screenland between the doomsday hilarity of Woody Allen and the outrageous parody of Mel Brooks lives a satiric filmmaker whose territory is less savage, just as bracing and even more optimistic. Few filmmakers have depicted both New Yorkers and Hollywood denizens with more zest and humor, and the human condition has rarely looked as loony as when he gets his hands on it. Mazursky will appear in person to introduce and answer questions at several of the screenings.
