I was able to get my wvdial up and running proper - thank you all for
the help.
However, there still seems to be one hitch - whenever i connect using
wvdial, lynx/konqueror/mozilla etc do not resolve the hostnames into IP
addresses. When I give the IP address of a machine in the address bar, I
am able to view the web-page. Not when I use the name of the website.
This problem does not exists when I dialup using kppp.For example,
http://202.54.63.230/exchange takes me to my college mail while anything
like www.hinduonnet.com gets rejected.
