Why do we use the conventional "vmlinuz" name. What does vm stands for ?

The kernel in ancient AT&T unix systems was called "unix". At
that time virtual memory support was not there. When berkeley rewrote the code
with virtual memory support enabled, they named the kernel as "vmunix". And so,
to follow the traditional naming convention, it seems, they have named the
linux kernel as "vmlinux" and the compressed one as "vmlinuz".
