Sir,
1. For other distros, you can use Puppy Linux or xubuntu. I prefer
xubuntu.
2. try custom Installation instead of default installation.
3. After installation, you must fine tune your system performance by
stopping unwanted services.
4. reduce the usage of high end graphics, uninstall games for more space
and make minimum partitions.
5. To avoid multiple installation for same configuration PCs, use G4L
(Ghost for linux- support FTP cloning) or clone zilla live. One more way is
network installation which is most useful to handle more than one PC at a
time.
