Having two partitions on the same disk doing RAID-1 is quite
pointless, in my opinion. If the disk starts to fail, you might be
able to recover your data, but since the mirror is maintained on the
same disk, chances are high that you will lose data anyway. RAID-1 is
best if you have two disks of identical size, and you can setup
mirroring between them. By using two partitions on the same disk to do
RAID-1, you lose half the size of the disk - you will get only 40GB
storage from an 80GB disk. Also, disk writes become much slower (since
each chunk of data has to be written in two places on the same disk).
The cons outweigh the pros, so to speak. Get another disk of the same
size and then setup RAID-1 between them.
