Virus writers will not bother about LDAP or some other format used by
certain people. They want Outlook addressbook which has a uniform
format.

That is different technology. Using botnets for sending spam.
Virus writers do that with Windows machines and possibly linux open
relays. But the end machines are never linux. So you are right.

I am not saying that it is not possible, but highly unlikely.
in my early days I used to run as root, have an open relay and ftpd was
enabled - I got root kitted
Though I am a cryptographer I do not use secure practices in my life. I
have never got affected. I have a free attitude towards life and it
percolates into my computing practices also.
Linux is prone to attacks as you testify, but not virus attacks. Usually the
harm is restricted to your server or your service. You don't launch a network
wide denial of service attacks with a bunch of linux zombies.
Windows can be easily taught to work like a bunch of zombies in concert
and form a spammer botnet. Such things can't be done with Linux.
