Great going. But as far as I know for anything to catch Media
attention it should be a *gossip* ;-) or a personality or something
crazy happening around. One thing to catch the media attention without
actually inviting the folks would be dress like a Tux or a GNU and
stand in front of Spencer Plaza and give pamphlets and shake hands
with all the people who enter that day... <Idea hijacked from another
Free Software Users Group> Or may be dress like that and keep walking
on Pondy Bazaar or Mount Road wishing everyday 'Happy Software Freedom
Day' It will grab the attention of the onlookers and the MEDIA for
sure. and they will start writing about Free Software automatically.
understand that we are not just doing anything 'just-for-the-geeks' kinda.
Though we had been inviting publics for the LDDs, the response was very
less because the public doesn't know what we are actually into. The idea
given by tuxmaniac is really a good one, atleast for attracting public and
make them aware that something is happening around...
Inviting Media has not worked till date. May be you can turn it
around. :-) Give her the chennailug.org website and you pick up the
best of the events conducted and let her know. To know more about SFD
its there on http://softwarefreedomday.org/
Yup, again. We have tried calling some media persons (including a famous
Linux magazine available in India ;) ) for some of our past events like
Arunai and Jaya college LDDs, but we were never heard. So, we need to do
something to make them feel the necessity of giving space for our news :D
not really , we dont have to dress up like tux to catch attention , the
very fact that lug does social service and helps educating masses and that
most proffessionals inspite thier tight shedule contribute to the
community for no returns is something very interesting and to be highly
appreciated and its this very fact that has catched thier attention.
Even if you do social service and go to educational institutions and do
something, you need media to catch the public attention. And, we need do
something to catch the media's attention itself :(
If
I, only a person active for say one month can say so much abt lug , i am
sure that there are many of you who can give more specific details to let
the city know whats happening in thier habitat .The expected outcome is
obvious , more awareness , more chances of ppl who need help approaching
us , and a better reason and awareness of prospective members to share the
responsibilities of lug :) And since the events which have already passed
are not there in chennailug.org , the mailing is the only source i can
turn to for more details.
Why put the load on others when you can do it yourself. There is nothing
like a 4 year old luggie only should speak to media or do a write up, in
ILUGC even just a day old luggie can do. And, you do know whats the plan
for SFD (as there aren't many ;) ) Help the chennailug.org maintainer to
put the past events on the site rather than complaining that there aren't
there ;)
