[Ilugc] ncomputing vs thin clients

an educational institution has decided to go completely open source. Among
other things they are required to have 2 labs with 60 machines each. They have
been advised to go in for:
http://www.ncomputing.com/
It is not advisable to choose ncomputing solution, especially if the
institution prefers
to go completely with open source.
which will save money and energy. I cannot make out if this is an open source
solution.
NComputing supports both Windows / Linux and it is not open source, and they use
their own vspace Desktop virtualization software in their NComputing device.
Apparently they have to buy 10 full fledged machines to which they
attach the ncomputing box which costs 4000. To the ten machines they add 6
keyboards, monitors and mouses.
It is better advised to go for a low cost Intel Atom Board + procesor with
512MB / 1 GB RAM
using PXE for network booting supporting LTSP.
I was planning to suggest ltsp - but what would the economics of that be?
would it compare with the ncomputing solution? what kind of thin clients are
available and at what cost?
The above mentioned setup for LTSP would be more economical option for the
institution without vendor lock-in
problems and when compared with ncomputing solution, LTSP is much a better
option
both in terms of economical and technical capabilities.
The following things are required for setting up LTSP thinclient
1. Intel ATOM processor + Board (Rs. 3,000)
2. 512/1GB RAM
3. Mini-ITX Cabinet
If the institution requires any suggestion / demo on this kind of setup, we
would be glad to
assist them.
