[Ilugc] how to install Ubuntu

hi friends,

i am a *new user of linux.*

*I amI not able 2 install the ubuntu 8.10* on to my system which already has
Windows XP..

I tried many times.It opens till the desktop like screen,but later *it hangs
* and im not able 2 work on it.i havn't worked on it not even once.

help me
