Not really. Keep both programs running (minicom and hyperterminal), use
one to dial (ATDT number). When the other guy's phone rings, he'll get
the string "RING" again and again from his modem. Answer with "ATA" or
whatever command it is your modem uses - and you're connected !
If you have a null modem cable, of course, dialling etc isn't an issue.
Whatever you type on your terminal gets echoed on the other guy's. Use a
protocol like zmodem to transfer files.
