loosely,  software   that  needs  to  be  running   24x7.   These  are
high-availability  apps that  need to  be robust,  reliable  and fast.
Interestingly  there seems  to be  a company  named  'mission critical

Because  linux  has  enough  tools  that saves  the  time  in  writing
things. Generally, when someone wants to get a job done, they look for
existing tools that can do the job. FLOSS has given us wonderful tools
that need little to moderate changes  to get it working in the way one
wants it.

From what I've  heard from people running businesses  using Linux (AND
those not  using linux for  a reason) is  that Linux fits  pretty well
with  most of  their  common needs  like  running a  mail server,  web
server, routers  or kiosks.  A  few of them  even go to the  extent of
writing  their custom apps  on Linux  just because  there are  lots of
development tools and  any help needed thereby can  be easily obtained
from the  community. But some  niche areas of computing  (chip design,
biotech and such) have better software on other platforms.
