Firmware is flat code, and is different from the layer
of operating systems. I do see a lot of embedded
projects that mention this phrase. If they are simply
referring to using gcc to compile source code (C or
assembly) for an architecture, it is purely firmware
and has nothing to do with the Linux kernel. Or are
they referring to code on a ROM that interacts with
the system?
