And, finally, whichever the reason be (is there a third one?), are
we lifting an idea from an existing system then?
Well., its true that the desktop themes of today are targetted more
towards making the GNU/Linux desktop look more like a XP desktop. But
that was not the motive when `X' came around. The Mac people thought
of graphics and pointing devices first. They brought it to the
desktops. The UNIXers wanted a graphical frontend to communicate with
the UNIX servers., and the `X window' project came up. The design of
the GUI on Mac and on `X-Window' are totally different. May be we can
say that the UNIXers got inspired to use GUI after seeing the Mac
desktops. But the implementation ideas were totally different. Its
like pizza and burger. Both are fast food. but definitely not the
same.
