yes, it does sound more literate.
and "hai" that i keep seeing used instead of "hi" tends to trigger a
completely different meaning ... "hai" pronounced with an "aa" in the
middle is the hindi equivalent of "aiyo", typically used when you hear
news that someone you know just passed away.
