Any Inventions/Discoveries happens after a long and hard strants of
work. The Universities and colleges are places where sparks/lights are
being poured. The students who wipes it becomes an inventor. No one
knows when a spark will happen in human brains. Website is just a
visiting card. We have enough work to do rather than updating website.
Just few days back you would have heard about 10,000 Rupees Computer
(Linux Enabled ) Just a sample for you....Where many universities are
involved. If you pierce into technology/invention/ sites you will
probably land up in an university website only.... just reverse your
thought.....
Putting together a computer at a low cost is somewhat complex and I
understand that there is some of research involved in it, but that is not
core research. That is to mean that no significant technological
breakthrough resulted from it. Here I am basically interested in hearing
about research where such significant breakthroughs result which alter our
lives (atleast those of geeks) in a fundamental way - example, the
invention of the X-windowing system, Ethernet, Laser printing, DES, RSA,
WiFi, Internet..etc.
Please note that I am in no way trying to belittle the achievement of
those who built the low cost computer (whose progress I have been watching
with some interest); I am just trying to explain my question better.
Also, I am primarily interested in hearing about research conducted in
academic institutions - I am fully aware of the research happening in
companies here these days. There is a lot of good research happening in
Biotech now, for instance.

Prem
